It is accepted that empathy plays a key role in people’s moral development. It has been proposed that empathy directed at humans will transfer to animals and other living beings So, it is believed that highly empathic individuals for humans are also highly emphatic for animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate and assess if there is a link between animal oriented empathy and human oriented empathy, and to investigate variables which may affect the human’s empathic attitudes towards animals. For this purpose, 388 volunteer students from Fırat University were surveyed. It was observed that there was a modest correlation (Kendall's tau=0.288, P<0.001) between attitudes on animal-oriented-empathy and human-oriented-empathy. There were significant differences between participants’ attitudes in terms of gender, urban/rural origin, childhood or current ownership of pet. Women (P<0.001), participants who come from urban areas (P<0.05), participants who have pet (in childhood P<0.001; current P<0.01) show more empathic attitude than others. Likewise, participants whose parents love animals (P<0.001) and not derogate animals (P<0.01) show more positive attitudes towards animal-oriented-empathy.
