Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease, which is caused by the obligate intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, causing significant losses in humans and ovine ruminants. In this study, sheep and goat farms with a history of abortion cases were screened in the province of Izmir and its surrounding five provinces of the Aegean Region, which has a high livestock potential. Blood serums of 166 sheep and goats (118 sheep and 48 goats) of one year old and older were collected in total from 15 farms. Anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies were investigated by using ELISA test and positivity was detected in 34 sheep and goats (20.48%) in 11 farms (%73.33) and anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies were not detected in four farms. At the species level, the ratios of the positive cases were detected as 14.4% in sheep and 35.42% in goats, respectively. As a result, with this study, the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in sheep and goat farms with abortion complaints in Izmir and its surrounding provinces was determined, and the possible field reflection of abortion problems caused by Toxoplasma gondii was revealed. In future studies, it is important to consider parasitic factors in the investigation of abort causes in the Aegean Region.
