PCR Screening for Determining Toxoplasma gondii Prevalence in Aborted Sheep and Goat Fetuses

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasitic protozoa that infect humans and warm-blooded animals that are widespread worldwide. Toxoplasmosis is especially caused by T. gondii, in farm animals such as sheep and goats. It causes weak off spring or stillbirths and leads to economic losses.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of T. gondii in sheep and goat fetuses. In this study, tissue samples (lung, heart, liver) of 99 aborted fetuses from 78 sheep and 21 goats from 9 provinces (Samsun, Sinop, Amasya, Giresun, Ordu, Rize, Tokat, Trabzon ve Sivas) between 2018 and 2020 were used. Identification of T. gondii was made by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method using specific primer pairs that produce a 529 bp product from the B1 gene region. As a result of the study, the positivity was detected in one sheep fetus in 2018, in three fetuses in 2019, and in 2 two fetus samples in 2020, in a total of 6 samples (%7.7). However the positivity of T. gondii was not detected in any of the goat fetus samples.

In conclusion, the present study, the presence of T. gondii was found at a substantial rate in aborted fetus samples of sheep. In addition, it is thought that not ignoring T. gondii in studies to be conducted with aborted fetus samples will be effective and contribute to keeping toxoplasmosis under control.
