In recent years, the emergence of pathogenic new viral strains such as EBOLA, SARS CoV-1, MERS in the world have caused a global pandemic threat, especially with the new coronavirus strain Covid-19 as the last example. Rapid development of drugs and vaccines has gained importance in the fight against this epidemic. Vaccines are agents that stimulate the body's immune system to recognize the antigen. Recently, a new vaccine form has been introduced that can reduce the risk from conventional vaccines. This type of vaccine is an edible vaccine produced from genetically modified plants. Herbal-based vaccines are a technology that may also be effective in the fight against Covid-19, as it provides promising results for clinical-level candidates. Injectable vaccines can be produced using transient expression systems that offer high protein yields and are industrially accepted as Virus-Like Particles (VLP) vaccines and other biopharmaceuticals under Good Product Manufacturing (GMP) processes. In addition, this approach offers the opportunity to develop oral vaccines as the plant cell can act as an antigen carrier agent. In the production of edible vaccines, the gene encoding bacterial or viral disease-causing agent can be incorporated into plants without losing its immunogenicity. The main mechanism of action of edible vaccines is to activate systemic and mucosal immune responses against a disease-causing foreign organism. Edible vaccines can be produced by introducing the transgene into the selected plant cell. Currently, edible vaccines are being developed in the veterinary and medical field. The society should be aware of the use and benefits of edible vaccines. Compared to other traditional vaccines, edible vaccines are cost-effective, efficient and safe. They are promise for better prevention from diseases.
