The Current Problems and Suggested Solutions on Animal Husbandry in Elazığ Province

Elazığ province with 9153 km2 area occupies 0.12 % of Turkey’s fields.The population of Elazığ is 520.534 and 63.32 % of them live in city and 36.68 % of them live in villages.The population density of Turkey population Elazığ is one of 3.th class developed cities.

Cattle population is 469.383 in Elazığ, 53 % of it local breed, 39.8 % of it cross breed, 6.8 % of it pure breed cattle and 0.22 % of it buffaloes.Small ruminant population is 345.465 in Elazığ, 56.46 % of it sheep and 17.14 % of it goats.Farm animal population has been decreased 40 % in last ten years.Cattle population 29, sheep population 42 %, goat population % 45 and buffalo population 61 % decreased.

There are different milk cow farms in Elazığ, 97.50 % of them is small, 2.37 % of them is medium and 0.12 of them is big farms. 2.20 % of Elazığ field is used to produced feed plants.This production is under Turkey’s average.Elazığ has got four milk products factory and the capacity of them are 950 tons butter, 11649 tons pasteurised milk, 1464 tons yogurt and 2720 tons cheese per year. Elazığ has got two slaughter houses and their capacity are 1500 big and 400 small ruminant per month.However, because of integration and marketing problems they work with half of their capacity.

Animal husbandry and products can be a propulsion for Elazığ economy and civilisation.To improve animal husbandry, farmers should be supported.At the same time a research should be carried out on improvement of animal breeds and cross breeding.Feed plant farming should be encouraged and the most important factors is to solve marketing problems and to set competition in market.Farmers should be informed about new developments and great importance should be given to farmer training.

Technical and financial support should be given to reach these aims.Farmers situation and needs should be taken care and animal husbandry and animal products should be financially supported.
