Macro-Anatomical Investigations on the Skeletons of Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) II. Ossa Membri Pelvini

The aim of this study was to investigate the bones of the pelvic limb of the Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris). For this purpose, a total of 3 adult male squirrels were used.

Ossa coxae were parallel to each other. Foramen obturatum was very large and tuber ischiadicum had one prominence.

Trochanter tertius was over developed. Arciform grooves of the cochlea tibiae were oblique. The fibula was both proximally and distally attached to the tibia.

Caput tali was distally enlarged and collum tali was over developed. The distal row of tarsus was consisted of four bones.

Each tarsal bone was considerably flattened in both sides at its proximal half while it was oval at its distal half.

In conclusion; despite some differences, pelvic limb bones of squirrels was found similiar to other rodents.
