The aim of this study was to examine the urinary tract abnormalities accompanying enuretic children.
The hospital records of 111 patients with enuresis, referred to Pediatric Nephrology unit were evaluated retrospectively. The mean age was 9.7 years (6 to 17 years), 58 (52.3%) were male and 53 (47.7%) female. Enuresis was nocturnal in 74 (66.7%) patients, continuous in 32 (28.8) patients, Diürnal in 5 (4.5%) patients, primary in 77 (69.4%) patients and secondary in 34 (30.6%) patients. By ultrasonography, abnormal findings were detected in 15 (18.3%) of 82 patients in urinary system. A disease of the urinary system was accompanying the enuresis in 32 (28.8%) patients. Urinary tract infection (UTI) was the most prevalent one among these diseases (29 cases, 90.6%). Voiding cystourethrogram was performed to 14 of the patients with recurrent UTI and vesicoureteral reflux was detected in 4 (28.6%) of them. By lumbosacral X-rays, spina bifida occulta was found in 20 (55.6%) of 36 cases. It is concluded that children with enuresis should be investigated for an underlying abnormality of the urinary tract. |
