In this study, two hundred samples of Turkish traditional Civil cheese sold in Erzurum, Turkey, were
examined for the presence of storage mites.
Only one species of storage mite, Acarus siro was found in only one sample of 200 Civil cheese samples (0.5%). Two male and one female adult mites and three eggs of mites were determined in the positive cheese sample, whereas no larval and nymphal mites were found. In conclusion, in order to avoid growth of storage mites in Civil cheese, the production and especially storage stages of cheese should be carried out under hygienic and right environmental conditions. |
