In this study, we aimed determine HBsAg and anti-HBs seroprevalence in chronic hemodialysis patients.

HBV infection is a major health problem all over the world and in Turkey. The principle route of transmission is parenteral. Therefore, patients receiving blood transfusions have increased risk for the transmission of HBV. Additionally, intravenous drug addicts are also in the high-risk groups. In this study, we investigated the seroprevalence of HBsAg and anti-HBs among chronic hemodialysis patients (n=62, 28 female, 34 male) at Hemodialysis Unites of Elazığ Government Hospital.

The patients were applied hemodialysis three times a week and totally, 8-144 months. HBsAg positively and anti-HBs positively were found 5 (%8.1) and 24 (%38.6) respectively.

The hemodialysis process is a factor in hepatitis B spread; different machine must be used for HBsAg positive patients.
