Sudden death in sports is the term given to nontraumatic deaths that occur during the exercise or in the next few hours after the exercise. Sudden death in young and educated athletes is usually the result of an underlying or nonsuspicious congenital and cardiovascular disease. Among these, the most important ones are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, abnormal right coroner artery, and arhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Family history, pain during and after the exercise, continuous palpitation are significant indications of cardiovascular disease. In order to prevent sudden death during or after exercise, athlete's and his/her immediate family's history should be carefully examined, any cardiovascular disease should be diagnosed by echocardiography, electrocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and if necessary the athlete should be disqualified from the competitions. In this article, it is aimed to stress the importance of medical examination of all athletes before participation to sport activity and to give basic informations about sudden death risk factors and prevention strategies.
