A Study on Approaches of Veterinary Practitioners about Drug Residues in Food Animals

Issue of drug residue in animal food is one of the most debated questions in the current century. The residue problem resulting from the increased use of veterinary products for the purposes of improving production, prevention and treatment of diseases in animals has taken a significant place within these debates. It is known that veterinarians have a determining role in point of drug use. In this study, it was aimed to reflect views of veterinarians about drug use in food animals.

A questionnaire consisting of three parts; personal data, hormone use in animal, veterinarian attitudes was designed. The data were collected by personal interviews from a total of 100 randomly selected veterinarians in 11 provinces, and were loaded onto computer. The data were subjected to frequency, t-test, and variance analysis.

In conclusion, it was found out that 88% of veterinary practitioners were against the use of hormones, 83% did not propose the use of hormones, 36% did not use hormones, 9% of participants kept the records of the legislation in writing prescriptions. In addition, 47% of the participants reported that breeders were primarily responsible for residue matter in animal originated food.
