Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, acute fatigue syndrome

The purpose of this study was to identify the presence of acute fatigue syndrome in Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients, its level, and factors affecting fatigue.

The Brief Fatigue Inventory, which was developed at Anderson Cancer Center, was used to evaluate for acute fatigue in 62 patients with Type II DM.

It was determined that 53.2% of the Type II DM patients were male, 46.8% were female and 37.1% were between 46-55 years old. The diagnosis had been made within 1-5 years for 45.3%, 43.5% were on oral antidiabetic therapy, 53.2% were being followed in the outpatient clinic, 43.6% felt mild fatigue at that moment, 40.3% had moderate level of general fatigue within the last 24 hours, and there was a low level of the worst felt fatigue. A strong negative correlation was found between general fatigue level and weight loss (r:0.489, p:0.005). Very significant positive correlations were found between general fatigue level and levels that affect daily activities and HbA1C level (r:0.364; p:0.004, r:0.283; p:0.026).

It is determined that the Type II DM patients felt mild fatigue at that moment, had moderate level of general fatigue within the last 24 hours, and there was a low level of the worst felt fatigue. The increase on the HbA1C level effects general fatigue level and levels that affect daily activities.
