In this study, the relationship between blood selenium levels, age, body condition score (BCS) and milk yield during lactation period were compared in 20 cows with retained fetal membranes (RFM) and 29 cows without retained fetal membranes and their effects on ethiology of RFM were investigated.

Blood selenium levels in cows with RFM and without RFM were measured 110,61±11,89 ng/ml and 124,06±10,38 ng/ml, milk production belonging to previous lactation period was 11577±1106,4 and 10467±596,2 kg, at the average age of 3.58±0.26 and 3.78 ± 0.23 respectively. The relationship between blood Se levels, milk production belonging to previous lactation period and age was not statistically important comparing to the cows with and without retained fetal membranes (p>0.05). In contrast, BCS was higher in the cows with retained fetal membranes (4,37±0,8) than those without retained fetal membranes (3,70±0,72) ( p<0.05).

As a result, the cows without RFM had much higher BCS than the cows with RFM. It was thought that BCS may have a role in ethiology of R.This, it was suggested that the cows in dry period should not be fed in a way to allow them gain excessive fat.
