The aim of this study was to determine the prevalance of the subclinical mastitis event with the help of the milk obtained from the cows in Şanlıurfa region, to isolate and identify the factors leading to mastitis and to determine their susceptibility to antibiotics.

Within the framework of this study, California Mastitis Test (CMT) was performed on 250 cows (1000 quarters). A total of 332 (33.2%) milk samples from 181 (72.4%) mastitic cows were tested microbiologically for aerobic pathogenic microorganism. From this 332 milk samples, 258 aerobic microorganisms were isolated and identified. The number and rate of isolated microorganisms were 84 (32.5%) Staphylococcus aureus, 71 (27.5%) Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (CNS), 23 (8.9%) Streptococcus spp., 16 (6.2%) Escherichia coli, 15 (5.8%) Arcanobacterium pyogenes, 9 (3.4%) Bacillus spp., 8 (3.1%) Corynebacterium bovis, 7 (2.7%) Micrococcus spp., 5 (1.9%) Enterobacter aerogenes, 5 (1.9%) Candida spp., 4 (1.5%) Pasteurella multocida, 4 (1.5%) Klebsiella pneumoniae, 4 (1.5%) Citrobacter diversus, 3 (1.1%) Pseudomonas auriginosa. As a result of an antibiogram, it was determined that the most effective antibiotics were trimethoprime+sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, tetracycline and amoxicillin, and it was also observed that those microorganisms showed a various degrees of resistance to the other antibiotics tested.

Consequently, it was cocluded that the prevalance of subclinical mastitis was high in Şanlıurfa. As a result that the factors leading to mastitis resulted in serious economic loss and that the anti-mastitis programs should focus more on those factors.
