The aim of this study was to determine the changes in the plasma lipid profiles in the cows with
traumatic pericarditis. The study was performed on 10 cows with traumatic pericarditis, 3-6 years
old, brought into the Clinic of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Firat
and 10 healty controls. The triglyceride (TG), cholesterol (CHOL), very low dansity lipoprotein
(VLDL), low dansity lipoprotein (LDL), high dansity lipoprotein (HDL), total bilirubin (TBIL), albumin
(ALB), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma
glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels were determined using a clinical chemistry analyzer, and
nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) level was determined by GC-MS in the plasma samples. The level
of CHOL (P<0.001), HDL (P<0.001), LDL (P<0.05), VLDL (P<0.01), NEFA (P<0.001), AST
(P<0.05), ALT (P<0.01), TBIL (P<0.01) and ALB (P<0.001) were significantly higher in the TP
groups compared to control animals. The decreased level of TG and increased level of GGT were
not significantly different between groups. It was concluded that, the hepatic damage occured
during pericarditis traumatica cases, and plasma lipid profiles was affected because of both hepatic
damage and anorexia during disease processes.
