This study was conducted to determine the effects of both the uterine horn of the cryopreserved
embryo placement according to corpus luteum, ipsilateral or colleteral, and the depth of embryo
placement in the uterine horn on pregnancy rates in heifers. Deep transfer was defined as the
injection of the embryo in third one-third of the cornu uterine, while shallow transfer was defined as
the injection of embryo in first one-third stage of the cornu uterine. According to this definition and
location of the corpus luteum, recipients were divided into four different groups. On day 7 after
oestrus, embryos, grade1 embryos frozen with ethylene glycol by direct transfer method, were
transferred deep-ipsilateral in Group I (n=12), shallow-ipsilateral in Group II (n=13), deep-collateral
in Group III (n=13) or shallow-collateral in Group IV (n=12). Pregnancies were examined 28 days
after transfer by ultrasonography. Pregnancy rates in Group I, II, III and IV were 41.7% (5/12),
61.5% (8/13), 30.8% (4/13), and 25% (3/12), respectively. The differences among groups were
non-significant (P>0.05). When transfers are analyzed as deep and shallow groups, the pregnancy
rates were 36% (9/25) in deep group, 40% (11/25) in shallow group, but the difference was not
significant. If transfers are evaluated as ipsilateral and colleteral, pregnancy rates were 52%
(13/25) in ipsilateral group and 28% (6/25) in collateral group. Pregnancy rate in ipsilateral transfers
tended to be higher than in collateral transfers (P=0.07). It is concluded that the embryo should be
placed in the uterine horn ipsilateral to the corpus luteum in direct transfer.
