Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) is a zoonotic species complex of worldwide importance that causes cystic echinococcosis (CE), differing in their life cycles and host selection. In this study, haplotype diversity, genetic variation, and population structure were investigated using the mitochondrial cytochrom oxidase b (mt-cytb) sequence of E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) isolates submitted to GenBank from different parts of the world. For this purpose, 418 gene sequences belonging to the cytb gene from 26 different locations and 12 different host species were included in the analysis. Mutations were detected at 114 different points in the cytb gene sequence and 102 haplotypes were identified. Tajima's D, Fu's Fs and Fu's LD values showed significant and high negative values. It has been shown that there are haplotype differences and genetic variation among the created subpopulations in the sequences analyzed in the study. This study may serve as a basis for large-scale studies on the worldwide epidemiology, geographical distribution and cytb gene-based population structure of E. granulosus s.s.
