This study was carried out to investigate the effect of raising dry matter content of whole-crop oat silage by using different methods on feedlot performance and carcass characteristics. Y group was ensiled as fresh on the same day of harvesting, Pt group was ensiled after wilting 24-48 h on the ground and Y+S group was ensiled as fresh by adding straw treated with HCl (fresh material 80% + straw 20%). In the study, a total number of 18 Awassi sheep at the age of 6-8 months, allocating 6 sheep in each group were used. As daily dry matter intake and daily body weight gain of the sheep were found to be higher in Pt and Y+S groups when compared with Y group (P<0.05), there was no statistically significant difference for feed efficiency rates between groups. Cold carcass weights were 20.24, 20.92 and 19.19 kg (P<0.05), back leg weights 7.06, 7.28 and 6.64 kg, (P<0.05) and front leg weights 3.60, 3.82 and 3.39 kg (P<0.05) in Pt, Y+S ve Y groups respectively. No statistically significant differences (P>0.05) were found between groups in terms of other carcass characteristics. It was concluded that, raising dry matter content of whole-crop oat silage by using different methods has a positive effect on feedlot performance and some carcass characteristics in sheep.
