This study was conducted to evaluate the accelerator effects of coral and demineralized bone matrix (DBM) on bone healing in rabbits. Twelve male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into two equal groups. Under the general anaesthesia, two bone defects models (3.5 mm diameter) were constituted on the proximal part of the tibia of all rabbits bilaterally. Twelve bone defects were left empty (Control group). The other defects were filled with coral, DBM and coral plus DBM, respectively (twelve defects in each group). Clinical, radiographic and histologic examinations were performed after surgery on the 30th and 60th days. In radiological examinations, it was determined that the bone healing was better in coral, DBM and coral plus DBM groups than in the control group. Results of the histological examinations on the 30th and 60th day shown that bone healing was better in the grafted groups than the control group. It was concluded that coral, DBM and coral plus DBM are effective on bone healing.
