Determination of the Attitude of the Members of Student Communities Established at Fırat University toward the Use of Animals in Scientific Research

This study was conducted with an aim to determine the attitude of the members of different student communities, established at Fırat University, toward the the use of animals in scientific research. For this purpose, in the spring semester of the 2015-2016 academic year, three student communities were selected from each of the science, culture, health and social communities subordinated to the Student Communities Unit of the Department of Health, Culture and Sports of Fırat University. Data was collected by personally interviewing a total of 120 students, comprising 10 students from each of the selected student communities, who were all asked to answer a questionnaire. Some of the main results were as follows: (a) 73.3% of the participants displayed an animal-centred attitude (4≥). (b) Students, who owned pet animals (P<0.05), members of the social communities (P<0.05) and the Animal Protection Community, as well as students attending the Vocational School of Medical Services (P<0.05) displayed a more positive attitude with respect to animal-centeredness, in comparison to the other demographic groups. (c) Excluding the students attending the Medical Faculty and the members of the Fırat University Branch of the Turkish Medical Students International Committee (MSIC), all of the demographic groups displayed a positive attitude. d)A higher percentage of the participants declared that they agreed with the judgement that animal experiments are more scientific, common, economic and reliable as well as easier in comparison to alternative methods, and indicated that they did not agree with the judgement that animal experiments are more conscientious.
