Protective Effects of Propolis and Artichoke in Cyclophosphamide-Induced Hemorrhagic Cystitis in Rats

In the study, the effects of propolis and artichoke on bladder toxicity induced by cyclophosphamide (CP) were investigated. The rats were divided into 6 groups. The groups were generated as control group, propolis-treated group (200 mg/kg/day gavage, 7 days), artichoke-treated group (1 g/kg/day gavage, 12 days), CP-treated group (150 mg/kg i.p. single dose), CP+propolis treated group and CP+artichoke-treated group. Propolis treatment was started for 2 days before the CP treatment and continued for 7 days. Artichoke treatment was started for 7 days before CP treatment and continued for 12 days. Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities were determined in the bladder tissue. In the CP treated group, MDA (P= 0.013) and GSH (P<0.001) levels were increased while CAT and GST activities were decreased when compared with the control group (P<0.001). In the CP+propolis and CP+artichoke treated groups were showed that MDA, GSH levels and CAT, GST activities reached normal levels. In conclusion, oxidative stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of CP-induced hemorrhagic cystitis toxicity, and propolis and artichoke can be considered as effective agents for improving the toxicity caused by CP treatment.
