Production and Marketing Status of Water Buffalo Breeders in Sivas Province

Having important advantages such as being able to evaluate low quality roughages and resistance to diseases, high adaption to different breeding conditions, water buffaloes are grown in many regions of the world due to their consumption habits and the quality of their products. The aim of this study was to reveal the breeder perspectives by using the data of a survey applied to a total of 122 breeders in the districts of Merkez, Şarkışla and Suşehri of Sivas province and containing the value, consumption, production conditions and marketing opportunities of the products. It was determined that the participants used the water buffalo milk and dairy products for their household needs and commercialized the surplus production in their neighborhood. Of the breeders, 98.4% stated that its milk was more valuable than other animal milk types and 49.2% expressed positive opinions about the value of its meat. It was determined that the participants were knowledgeable and willing about organic production. As a consequence, it is believed that diversifying the water buffalo dairy products and increasing the value added of products, publicizing its meat and products, creating a perspective that may increase the earnings of breeders.
