Investigation of the Prevalence of Hydatid Cysts in Sheep and Cattle Slaughtered in Ağrı Region

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and status of hydatid cysts seen in cattle and sheep slaughtered in Ağrı region and to determine its distribution in the internal organs. Organ examinations were performed manually and visually on 800 cattle and 250 sheep slaughtered in the Municipality or Private Slaughterhouses and Ağrı Meat and Milk Institution in Ağrı region. Hydatid cysts were detected in 397 (49.63%) of 800 cattle and 141 (56.4%) of 250 sheep slaughtered in Ağrı region. When the organ involvement of the cysts detected in cattle and sheep was examined, it was observed that the most involvement was in both lungs and liver. The prevalence of hydatid cysts in cattle and sheep in Ağrı region was found to be higher when compared to the other regions. In order to prevent the spread of the disease and reduce economic losses, preventive and protective measures should be taken in the region.
