The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic and prognostic significance of serum collectin-11, surfactant protein A (SP-A) and D (SP-D), and acute phase protein levels in horses with respiratory system disease. In the present study, 18 horses that were clinically healthy constituted the control group (Group I), while 18 horses with respiratory system problems formed the disease group (Group II). Group II's Cl-11 concentration on day 0 [2.05 (1.51-2.76) μg/mL] and day 7 [1.57 (1.30-3.04) μg/mL] was compared to that of Group I [0.63 (0.44-2.09) μg/mL] significantly increased (P=0.027, P=0.027). Group II's SP-D concentration on day 0 (P=0.012), day 7 (P=0.004) and day 14 (P=0.014) was found to be significantly higher than Group I's SP-D concentration. In addition, Group II's SP-A concentration on day 0 (P=0.01) and day 7 (P=0.004) was found to be higher than Group I's SP-A concentration. It was determined that there were significant increases in the concentrations of serum amyloid A and fibrinogen, which are among the acute phase proteins, on the 14th day in Group II compared to Group I. The 7th and 14th day concentrations of Hp, another acute phase protein, were found to be significantly higher in Group II compared to Group I. According to these preliminary findings, it is thought that serum Collectin-11, SP-A and SP-D concentrations may play an important role in the diagnosis and prognosis of respiratory system diseases.
