Venous Blood Gas Parameters of Zavot Cattle by General, Age, and Sex in Winter Season in Kars Province

This investigation was performed on Zavot breed cattle in Kars province. Kars is placed on a high altitude plateau having long and hard winter conditions. In the province, cattle are kept indoor during the long winter seasons and they breathe limited fresh air. This investigation was aimed to reveal venous blood gas parameters according to general, age and sex of the cattle, which was closely related to metabolic activities and respiratory tract diseases of animals. The results were analyzed according to general, age and sex. General values determined as; pH: 7.40±0.005, pCO2: 46.06±0.79 mmHg, pO2: 32.86±0.86 mmHg, HCO3-: 25.95±0.32 mmol/L, base excess extracelluler fluid (BD-eks): 3.24±0.42 mmol/L, base excess blood (BD-k): 2.85±0.35 mmol/L, oxygen saturation (O2-doy): 56.65±1.85% and total CO2 (t-CO2): 29.02±0.43 mmol/L. It was determined that values according to age and sex was similar to general values. There was a significant correlation between pCO2, BD-eks, BD-k, and t-CO2 (min. r= 0.411, P<0.05) and pO2 and O2-doy (min. r= 0.965. P<0.001). In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between some parameters (pO2 - pCO2: r= -0.582, P<0.001, pO2 - BD-eks: r= -0.374, P<0.05, pO2 - t-CO2: r= -0.467, P<0.01, O2-doy – pCO2: r= -0.658, P<0.001 and O2-doy - t-CO2: r= -0.430, P<0.05)

In conclusion, results of this study revealed that (i) Zavot cattle had been adapted to condition of the province according to venous blood pH, pCO2, pO2, HCO3-, BD-eks, BD-k, O2-doy ve t-CO2 values, and (ii) there was no effect of age and sex on above mentioned values except pCO2 values according to sex for this cattle breed.
