In this study, it was aimed to compare the some biochemical and minerals levels on prepartum and postpartum period in Awassi ewes.

A total of 30 pregnant Awassi ewes, aged 3-5 years were used. Blood was taken from V. Jugularis of the ewes. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin (ALB), direct and total bilirubin, total protein (T.Protein), glucose (Glu), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphor (P) and iron (Fe) levels were investigated in serum samples.

The levels in pre-and postpartum period of Awassi ewes were defined as following: ALP (76,13±6,41; 150,97±14,09 IU/L), AST (72,07±3,60; 91,07±2,81 IU/L), albumin (2,54±0,09; 2,47±0,08 g/dl), total protein (5,85±0,16; 6,13±0,09 g/dl), glucose (44,50±2,13; 42,43±1,86 mg/dl), direct bilirubin (0,13±0,01; 0,15±0,01 mg/dl), total bilirubin (0,16±0,01; 0,17±0,01 mg/dl), Ca (7,92±0,26; 8,66±0,31 mg/dl), P (2,56±0,15; 3,27±0,19 mg/dl), Fe (70,83±4,65; 100,53±5,69 mcg/dl), Mg (2,82±0,70; 4,36±1,41mg/dl). The levels of ALP (p<0.001), AST (p<0.01), Fe (p<0.01) and P (p<0.001) were found statistically different between prepartum and postpartum period while the other values did not differ.

In conclusion; the observations suggest that pre- and postpartum period of animals have to be taken into consideration for a correct interpretation of biochemical parameters and mineral levels.
